Statement Sums Involving 3 Digit Number Multiplication

In statement sum we are given a statement. We have to analyse the statement and then take appropriate action.

Following steps are required to solve the statement

1. Read the statement carefully

2. Find the values that are given

3. Find the quantity which is required

4. Then perform the process to reach the desired result.

Let us consider the following example;

There were 126 children. Each child ate 3 apples. How many apples were eaten in all?

1. We will first analyse the statement

2. We will find the values that are given

In the question it is given that

There were 126 children. Each child ate 3 apples.

Number of children = 126

Number of apples each child ate = 3

3. We will find the quantity which is required

In the question it is asked that

How many apples were eaten in all?

To find number of apples

We will perform multiplication as we are supposed to find the no. of apples eaten in all

126 X 3  = ?

We will perform the required operation

The multiplication can be done as follows

Step 1:

Multiply the digit at ones place

6 ones X 3 = 18 ones

As 18 is greater than 9 or we can say that 18 is a two digit number

We will write 8 ones in the ones column and carry 1 tens to the tens column.

Step 2:

Multiply the digit at tens place

2 tens X 3 = 6 tens

Now we add the carried over tens from the step 1

6 tens + 1 tens (carried over) = 7 tens

Write 7 in the tens column.

Step 2:

Multiply the digit at hundreds place

1 hundreds X 3 = 3 hundreds

Write 3 in the hundreds column.

Answer = 378

Hence the answer is 378 apples

Hence number of apples eaten in all are 378.
